Hearing Tests

Hearing tests are performed by licensed audiologists in our office and can take 30 to 60 minutes to perform.  If you are experiencing hearing problems, pain in the ear, tinnitus, dizziness or vertigo, our doctors will recommend a hearing test for you.  The examination typically involves 3 basic steps:
  • A basic visual examination of the ear canal and ear drum.
  • A hearing test containing 2 procedures:  a threshold test which involves responding to tones of varying volume and pitch, and the testing of speech understanding using words.
  • Immittance testing:  this exam is an automatic test which determines the mobility of the ear drum and the functioning of the middle ear space, as well as testing certain neural pathways and middle ear reflexes.
If you are seeing one of our doctors, the hearing test will be performed before you see the doctor.  This gives our doctors more information about how to diagnose and treat your particular complaint.

What is an Audiologist?

Audiology is the science of hearing, which includes habilitation (and rehabilitation) of persons with hearing loss and the art of hearing assessment.   An audiologist is a professionally trained individual licensed to practice audiology.  Our audiologists hold doctorate degrees and valid licenses for both audiology and hearing instrument dispensing.   Continuing Education Requirements (CEUs) have to be maintained every year in order to keep these licenses valid.  They also possess the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).  This certification demands strict guidelines pertaining to the content and amount of clinical experience required during graduate studies and during a Clinical Fellowship Year immediately after graduation.

Our audiologists are responsible for hearing testing, balance testing, hearing aid fitting and repair, and the fitting of custom ear molds for music, swimming and noise protection.  When coming to Los Angeles Ear, Nose and Throat for the first time, you may see one of our audiologists before seeing the doctor if you are complaining of any ear, hearing or balance related problem.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus (pronounced TIN-it-us or ti-NIGHT-us) is an internally generated noise perceived by the listener as a ringing or roaring sound.  This sound is not an externally (outside of the head) generated sound.  Most incidences of tinnitus appear to be a consequence of hearing loss, however, almost everyone has experienced tinnitus at some point, especially in very quiet surroundings.  Tinnitus can also be generated by many different types of medications (prescription and non-prescription), aspirin, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and exposure to loud noises.  Reactions to tinnitus vary from slight annoyance to incapacitating.

If you have tinnitus it is always recommended that you see your doctor.  A hearing test is usually one of the first steps when evaluating someone with tinnitus, since its presence may involve some form of hearing loss.

For more information on tinnitus, we also recommend the American Tinnitus Association website.
