"The doctors are great and the receptionist are very nice and always seem so happy."— Verified Patient
He has earned numerous accolades from his mentors and colleagues as a compassionate and competent clinician and talented surgeon.
“It’s often the case that I am meeting a patient during one of the most trying times in his or her life,” said Dr. Abdou. “Working in medicine gives me an opportunity to listen, learn, and be a part of these critical moments with a level of intimacy that few other professions can match.”
Dr. Abdou has a keen interest in the entire breadth and scope of otolaryngology with particular expertise in head & neck, sleep, and endoscopic sinus surgery.
“ENT is special in that we have so many tools to help treat conditions in minimally invasive but effective ways,” said Dr. Abdou. “We also work with some of the most complex but beautiful anatomy in the human body. Some of my favorite surgeries involve treating nasal obstruction and neck surgeries such as thyroid surgery.”
For Dr. Abdou, educating his patients and performing safe and satisfactory surgeries are his top priorities. Patients feel comfortable and ease with him.
“I am a firm believer that keeping a smile on your face is the first step to happy living,” said Dr. Abdou. “We meet new people, engage different personalities and face new challenges every day. Starting it all with a smile keeps me positive, inquisitive, optimistic, and engaged. And if my patients leave a visit smiling, I know I accomplished something great that day.”
During his time off, Dr. Abdou loves to cook learning from the best cook he knows….his mom!
“It is a mix of science, which I clearly love, and art that you can eat in the end,” he said. “I come from Lebanon, a country with a rich gastronomic heritage, so I am working on preserving and perfecting these culinary treasures.”
Dr. Abdou is passionate about helping those less fortunate. “It is mind-boggling that even today, access to care, testing, treatment, and research is limited and, unfortunately, many people around the world are still suffering and succumbing to illnesses which are entirely preventable and treatable,” he said.
In June 2019, Dr. Abdou will be participating in the AIDS/Lifecycle ride, a 545 mile cycling event from San Francisco to Los Angeles that raise funding in support of organizations working to treat patients with HIV and AIDS. “Riding allows me to play a small part in supporting this cause and gets me out and about, to experience all the beauty that California has to offer,” he said.
“My goal for each day is to experience all the richness and beauty around us in our beautiful city,” said Dr. Abdou. “There are an incredible number of things to see, smell, taste, hear, and experience all around us, though sometimes conditions can compromise our ability to participate. If I can help a patient do any of these things even just a bit better in good health, I consider it a success.”
